Love Beyond Reason (6)

Dawn stared at the phone in her hand as if it was a snake coiled to strike. She gingerly placed the phone on the table staring at it all the while, unable to process what she just heard.

Did Ugochi just say someone will kill her? She turned to Paul, her boyfriend of two weeks, who was staring at her, waiting for her to say what the problem was.

“That was Ugochi. She told me to come pick her up before someone kills her.” Saying it out loud like that propelled her to action. She jumped to her feet and dragged Paul by the hand. “Come on, we need to move.”

“What exactly is the problem? What did she say?” he asked as he grabbed his car keys and watched her put on shorts and a T-shirt hurriedly.

“She was crying, and she said I should come get her before someone kills her.”

“Did she say where she was?”

“No. but when I talked with her earlier, she said she was home. She sounded fine then. I can only assume it’s a problem between her and her man.”

By this time they were driving out of the compound. Dawn quickly dialed Ijay’s number as she gave Paul directions. Maybe she could give some meaning to this mess. Ijay picked on the first ring.

“Hi dear. What’s up? Why are you calling so late?”

“It’s Ugochi. She called me now to come pick her before someone kills her. I don’t know what is going on. I’m on my way to her house now though.”

“Kills her? Really? How did she sound?”

“She was crying. She sounded scared.”

“Oh my.”

“Yeah. I’ll let you know. We are at her place now.”

“Paul is with me.”

“Okay then. Keep me posted.”

They dropped the call just as Paul drove into the compound. Dawn barely waited for the car to come fully to a stop before opening the door and hurrying out. Paul was right behind her. She knocked loudly when she got to the door. She could hear shouting coming from within. She knocked again.

Few moments later Ikem came to the door. He was sweating profusely and breathing heavily. “What do you want?” he asked, blocking the door

Dawn tried to look behind him into the room but she could not see anything. “Where is Ugochi?” she demanded

“She is inside. I’ve packed all her stuff, I don’t want anything with a liar and a cheat.” He stepped back and Dawn rushed inside.

Ugochi was sprawled on the settee in the living room. Dawn covered her mouth with her palm to keep from screaming when she saw her.

Her face was covered in bruises, one eye swollen shut and there was a deep cut on her lower lip. There were bruises all over her body too, it was like she was involved in a motor accident.

“What in God’s name happened to you?” Dawn exclaimed

Ugochi pried her one good eye open. She blinked the eye several times before focusing on Dawn. She tried to sit up and groaned in pain. Paul quickly came forward to help her up. “Dawn, is that you?” she asked feebly.

“Yes dear. What happened to you?”

“Can you get me out of here first? I’ll explain to you later, please.”

“Okay, okay.” Dawn went to the other side of her and guided her to the door. They met Ikem by the door, still sweating, his arms crossed on his chest and his right leg jiggling as if preparing for battle.

“I don’t ever want to see you in this house today.” He said once they got to where he was stationed by the door. “Just come and pack your stuff tomorrow and get out of my life forever.”

Dawn was so angry she could not see straight. “You mean you were the one who hurt her like this? You beat her black and blue? And for what?” she demanded

Ikem refused to answer. He just kept staring at them and tapping his foot on the floor.

“Dawn, please let’s go. I need to leave this house now.” Ugochi said

They all filed out and went to the car. Dawn helped Ugochi in and arranged her in the best way to avoid pain. All through the drive back to the house, nobody said a word, they were all deep in thought wondering what could have made Ikem act that way. It was a very baffling situation.

Dawn called Ijay to keep her appraised of the situation and she promised to check on them tomorrow. Paul helped Ugochi in and drew Dawn aside when he had her settled in a chair.

“Babe, I need to go now so you’ll have time to take care of your friend. I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay. Thanks for your help.” She stood on tip-toe and kissed him on the cheek.

Dawn went to the kitchen, got a frozen pack of peas to use as a makeshift ice pack, grabbed her first aid box and went back to her friend. She handed the peas pack to her so she could place it on her swollen eye, and focused on treating the minor bruises and cuts that arrayed her body.

When she was done, she sat beside Ugochi and offered her shoulder for her to cry on, all the while thinking of how much she would like to hurt Ikem for hurting her friend.

Love Beyond Reason ( 5)

The next call Ugochi received was from Frederick.

“Hello dear,” he answered. “I just received a very distressing call from Ijay some minutes ago. She said it seemed your man saw us together the other day.”

“Yes, I think he did. It’s not confirmed yet but he’s been acting very strange. I think that could be the reason for his behavior, although he hasn’t asked me directly.”

“Ugochi, don’t you think it’s time we come clean? I mean, we are not helping anybody by being secretive. I think it is better we call Ikem and tell him about this. At least now that he seems to be suspecting you.”

“Do you think he’s ready to hear this yet? Personally, I don’t think he’s ready for a revelation of this magnitude. After all, I know him better than you do.”

“I know we agreed to take our time and break it to him gently but I don’t think we can go through that same route now that he is suspecting you. I believe it is better we come clean and just get it over with.”

“I understand you. Can you give me time to sort this out my own way? At least allow me determine what he knows first. This might not even be about us, you know?”

“Okay then. Let’s know what he knows first. Then we can make our decisions based on that.”

“Good. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Yeah, later. Bye dear.”

By the time Ikem got home, he was boiling with anger. His stomach felt tight with tension and his chest felt like it was going to burst from holding in his temper.

After that ridiculous lunch meeting with Donald, he had not been able to hold back the anger churning in him. The nerve of Ugochi. A woman he had loved for three years, and for her to treat him this way? It was disrespectful, it was disheartening, and above all, it pissed him off.

He slammed into the house only to find Ugochi seated calmly on the settee in the living room watching a movie. She was sprawled on the settee, a bowl of nuts beside her and a chilled glass of wine on the stool where her hand can easily pick it up.

Ikem stood behind her for a minute, breathing in and out, trying to calm himself and probably find a way to ice down the hot pool of anger in his belly. He was not succeeding though.

The sight of her seated there, seemingly without a care in the world just annoyed him the more. He could not fathom how she would throw away three years of a loving relationship just like that. And she did not even have the decency to tell him it was over? Instead, she was sneaking around, going behind his back and seeing different men. He decided to confront her once and for all.

Ugochi looked up when she saw Ikem, and smiled. “Oh hi baby. I didn’t hear you come in, I was so engrossed in this movie,” she sat up. “Have you been here long?”

“No, I just came in.” he wanted so much to slap that smug look off her face.

“Okay, welcome. How was work today?”

“I went to see Donald during the lunch hour.”

“Oh, okay. How is he? Hope there is no problem with him?”

“He told me something I found very hard to believe. How could you Ugochi?”

“How could I what? You’re not making any sense Ikem.” Ugochi said as her heart hammered furiously in her chest. Here it comes, she thought.

“Do you want to sit there and pretend you don’t know what I am talking about? You honestly want to play dumb with me?” his voice rose an octave as he talked. By the time he finished the sentence, he was shouting.

“Ikem, keep your voice down please, and explain to me what you are going on about.”

“I don’t owe you any explanation. You are the one who has a lot to explain so you better start now.”

Ugochi watched him calmly. She had to be absolutely sure of what he was referring to before she could even offer any form of explanation. What if he was not talking about what she thought?

“Ikem, you know I love you, but this behavior of yours is not helping matters at all. Sit down, and let’s talk about this like the adults we are.”

Ikem was so mad, he could barely see straight. “Are you insinuating that I am acting like a child? Is that what you are saying to me, Ugochi?”

Before she could answer, he dragged her up, and rained two slaps on her face. The force of the slap made her stagger and she found herself on the floor.

Before she could react and defend herself, he started punching her, hitting her over and over until she curled into a tiny ball of pain and agony. Only then did he release her. He was breathing heavily, in and out, while she just laid on the floor whimpering like an injured animal.

She could not stand up, she could not scream, all that came out of her were small whimpers, a sound very similar to that of an animal in terrible pain.

“In fact, I want you out of my house,” Ikem raged as he gave her a swift kick. “Go in there, pack your properties, and get the heck out of my house. I don’t ever want to see your face here anymore, you liar and cheat.” He stormed into the bedroom and Ugochi could hear him throwing things around like a mad man.

She dragged herself off the floor, painfully and little by little until she got to the place where she placed her phone earlier. Despite the pain fogging her mind and brain, she knew she had to call for help before Ikem came back to finish what he had started.

She dialed Dawn’s number with shaky fingers. Dawn lived close by and she could get there within a few minutes.

“Hey girl, what’s up?” Dawn said as soon as she picked.

Ugochi started sobbing. “Please come to the house to get me….come quickly before he kills me.” she managed to say into the receiver before collapsing on the floor.

Love Beyond Reason (4)

The next day Ugochi was in the office when Ijay’s call came through. She debated telling her about the happenings of last night for just a moment before making her decision. The matter was weighing so much on her mind, she needed to confide in someone.

“Hey girl,” she said into the receiver. “How are you?”

“I’m fine o. I called you last night to ask if you got home okay but you didn’t pick your call. I called you several times, hope you’re okay?”

“Girl, na plenty matter I meet for house o,” she began, and then launched into what happened.

Ijay sighed deeply when Ugochi finished recanting her story. “You mean, he slapped you? Like, he actually raised his hands to you and hit you?”

“Yes o. Na so I see am.”

“I’m speechless. I mean, that is so unlike Ikemefuna.”

“I thought so too.”

“What reason did he give for doing that?”

“You know, the usual now. Something like he didn’t know what came over him, he was stressed at work, I was out late, etc. I knew all that was just smoke though because he started asking me some strange questions. Ijay, I think he saw me with Frederick yesterday. I think that was why he flew off the handle like that.”

“Wow, wait a minute. What made you say that? Did he tell you he saw you?”

“No. At least he didn’t say it out, he was just asking me some strange questions like did I go out of the office or something like that. Anyway, I think something is up, something he knows that he’s not telling me about.”

“But….I don’t know how he could conclude it was something shady, at least if he saw you there, he must have seen me too.”

“Yes, that’s true girl! I didn’t even think of that. You were there with us the whole time now.”

“Exactly! I don’t think you have anything to worry about on that front. Our plans will proceed as outlined.”

“Hmmm, I hope so because I really don’t want him to know about this decision I am taking. I need everything to be perfect and in place before I tell him about it.”

“I understand girl. We’ll get it done.”

“Thank you dear. I know I can count on you.”

“You know I’ve got your back dear. Meanwhile, I don’t want you to worry about a thing.”

A thought suddenly popped in Ugochi’s mind. “Wait, Ijay!” she said “Remember, you stood up for like five minutes to use the rest room, so technically, you were not with us the whole time. What if he saw us then? What if it was during that period he saw Frederick and I? Sitting together? Discussing cozily?”

“Oh my goodness, I totally forgot that. Oh, you’re so right. He could have seen you guys then.”

“Oh, this is bad, this is so bad.”

“But wait now Ugochi, we are just assuming that’s what he saw. What if it was something else entirely? What if it had nothing to do with your lunch with Frederick?”

“Oh baby, I don’t think so. I have this gut feeling this is what it’s all about. He saw me, Ijay. He saw me.”

“Okay, calm down. Let’s deal with this in a logical manner. What if you’re right? What if he saw you? What then? You can lie your way around that. Just tell him he’s your colleague, or client or something. He doesn’t have to know what it is all about.”

Ugochi calmed down a bit and thought about it for a minute. “That’s true,” she agreed. “I can always lie about it, and then I’ll pretend to get angry because he doubted me.”

“You go girl. You see? It will all work out.”

Ugochi sighed deeply. “Yes, I believe so. I’ll wait for him to bring it up though. I won’t.”

“Good. I have to get back to work now. Keep me updated?”

They dropped the call and Ugochi laid her head on her office table. This is getting too complicated for me. I just want to do right by myself and by Ikem. At least, what he doesn’t know can’t hurt him, she thought to herself.

Ugochi was very wrong about that. What Ikem did not know could hurt him, and it was in fact hurting him. He managed to hold himself in check until lunch break, while his stomach churned with anger and disappointment.

He did not want to conclude though, he had to confirm what that bastard Donald saw before he took any action. He had never tolerated a woman cheating on him and he was not going to start now. She cheats, she goes.

Lunchtime came and Ikem bolted out of his tiny office cubicle as if pursued by demons. He paid no mind to his colleague Wale calling him to probably chat about last night’s game, and he stared Bibi, the sexy bombshell who was always making calf eyes at him, down as he quickly exited the building. He had thirty minutes to meet up with Donald and get to the bottom of the matter.

Five minutes later, he was seated across Donald at a small café. It took monumental control to keep from smashing his fist into Donald’s smug face.

“So, what did you see?” Ikem asked when they were both settled.

“Guy, why are we going over this matter again now? I already told you what I saw yesterday. I just felt it was my duty to tell my guy when I think his babe is stepping out on him. What are you taking it out on me?”

“I’m not taking it out on you. I just want to be absolutely sure of what happened.”

“Okay, I’m going to say this just one more time, and then I’m not going to talk about it again. By the way, why didn’t you ask your babe now?”

“She denied it,” he said. He didn’t like the gleam in Donald’s eyes so he explained further. “Okay, she didn’t deny it because I didn’t ask her straight out but she lied to me all the same.”

“Hmmm, interesting. Why didn’t you ask her?”

“I needed to be sure before accusing her of cheating.”

“Okay then. I saw her with this very sleek guy, handsome, you know? And looking very rich and put together. They were seated side by side, he was talking to her about something and she hung on his every word, looking at him adoringly, like lovers, you know?

So, I checked them out for a few minutes, and then left. That was when I called you. I didn’t hang around cos I didn’t want her to see me. That’s it.”

Ikem’s fingers were drumming a nervous rhythm on the table. He studied Donald for a few moments. “Did you see them kiss, or anything?”

“No. That’s all I saw.”

“No suspicious touching?”

“No. But come on, Ik, I’m not a kid. I know when a man and a woman got feelings for each other and those two were sending off serious vibes. Come on, man.”

Ikem checked his time. He needed to get back to work. “Okay.” He stood up and offered his hand to Donald for a handshake. “Thanks for having my back guy.”

Donald clasped his hand firmly. “Anytime, anytime.” he said as he pumped enthusiastically.

“I’ll see you around.”

“Sure. Are we still on for the game tomorrow night?”

“I’ll let you know.” Ikem said and walked out.

Donald watched him go with a wicked gleam in his eyes. Your girl is the most faithful in the world, eh? We’ll see how both of you handles this now. We’ll see, he laughed gleefully.

Love Beyond Reason (3)

But it had happened. It was a fact and the action could never be reversed. She would forever have it in mind that Ikem hit her, she could never forget it in a million years; and the love between them was forever tainted as a result of tonight’s happenings.

She could not fathom the reason behind his abhorrent behavior tonight. He had never raised his hand to her before.

Sometimes, when he was angry enough to hit her, he had walked away rather than go ahead with it. Recently though, he had been exhibiting some rather strange behavior, she had been baffled by the subtle change in him.

She fluffed her pillow as fresh tears fell down her face. Her heart was breaking into a million pieces. She could not believe that Ikem, her prince in shining armor, her tall, dark, and handsome lover would raise his hands to her. It still was unbelievable.

She stiffened as she heard the turn of the doorknob. Ikem came in quietly and stood by the door for a few moments observing her. There was a look of chagrin on his face.

“Ugochi…” he whispered.

Ugochi turned to face the wall. She did not want to hear any excuse or see that tortured look on his face. She needed him to suffer a little bit more.

“Ugochi,” he said again, this time a little more firm.

Ugochi refused the answer. She wished he would just go away and leave her to grief the loss of her trust in peace. It was not every day her boyfriend slapped her after all.

Ikem was not having that though. He shuffled closer to the bed, walked to the other side so he could see her face, and he sat on the bed beside her. Ugochi stiffened some more. Tension radiated from her body like sun rays.

“I’m so sorry baby,” Ikem began. “I don’t know what came over me. I promise it will never happen again.”

Ugochi stared at his face coldly. “You don’t know what came over you?” she asked angrily. “That is the lamest excuse in the book,” she spat.

“I know, I know,” he raised his palm up in surrender. “I know it sounds cliché but that is the truth.”

“It does not sound cliché, it is cliché.” She refused to look at him, she laid on her back, staring at the ceiling.

“I’m sorry Ugo. What else do you want me to say?””

“I want you to tell me why you think it was necessary to treat me that way tonight. And I don’t want to hear anything like ‘I don’t know what came over me’, because we both know that’s not true.”

Ikem refused to reply. He just kept staring at her. How could he tell her he reacted that way because of the information given to me by a man he does not even trust? He can never tell her what Donald told him. What if he was wrong? He needed to be absolutely sure first.

“But that was happened baby. Maybe I was angry because you stayed out so late, or maybe I was just feeling some residual stress. Either way, I’m sorry I hurt you.”

“I told you I would be out late, didn’t I? I distinctly remember telling you today was Dawn’s birthday, and that we were going for dinner at a plush restaurant on the island. Didn’t I?”

“Yeah, I think you did. Where were you this evening?”

“At work. Where else?”

“You didn’t go anywhere other than to work?”

“I went for Dawn’s birthday,” she threw up her hands in frustration. “Do I need to keep repeating myself?”

“Are you sure? No little lunch date with anyone?”

Ugochi narrowed her eyes at him speculatively. “No,” she replied. “Why the twenty questions?”

“I just want to be absolutely sure.”

Ugochi paused and looked at his face critically. She could see the confusion, and the faint anger, but there was something else lurking behind his eyes she couldn’t quite make out. There was something there that looked a lot like distrust.

“What is going on, Ikem?” she asked, baffled.

“Nothing. I’m sorry for hurting you, okay?” he caressed her abused cheeks. “Forgive me?” he stared into her eyes.

Ugochi wanted to ask more questions but she refrained. She decided to take the olive branch he was offering. Better keep the tentative peace.

“I forgive you darling. It was so out of character, it is easy to forgive. But please, control yourself better next time we have an argument.”

“I will. I love you.”

“Love you too.”

Few minutes later, they both lay in bed. They were not touching nor speaking with each other. Each was occupied with his own thoughts.

Ikem’s thoughts were whirling around his mind. So, who is lying? He thought. She claimed to be at work all day and Donald claimed he saw her having a drink with another man. Who is lying? I better get to the bottom of this, and fast.

Ugochi stared at the ceiling as the thoughts chased each other in her head. What did he mean by all those questions? Did he know something? Could he have spotted me with Fredrick this evening? Is that the reason for his aggressive and strange behavior? I better get to the bottom of this, and fast.

Love Beyond Reason (2)

Ugochi drove into her compound at exactly 10:30pm. She parked the car at the slot in front of her apartment, got out and locked the car.

She tried her door, found it locked and unlocked it with her keys.

Ikem is probably asleep, she thought. He would have locked the door when he was going to bed; she did not think it was likely though. He rarely slept before she got home.

She went in, and saw him seated in front of the TV. He did not turn around, or acknowledge her entrance in any way. Ugochi skirted the small dining table with just two chairs, and narrowly avoided stumbling over a pair of shoes as she walked up to him.

“Hi dearie. You’ve been waiting for long?” she asked as she sat beside him. She saw he was playing with the DSTV remote in his hands.

He dropped the remote as he turned to her, and she was momentarily taken aback by the cold look in his eyes.

“Where the heck have you been?” he demanded coldly.

She drew back, alarmed by the anger she felt emanating from him. “I told you I was going to have dinner with the girls now. Today is Dawn’s birthday.”

“I told you I was going to have dinner with the girls now.” He mimicked. “You were having dinner with the girls till this time? And you expect me to believe that?”

‘Why not? It is the truth.”

He stood up suddenly and leaned above her. “Don’t give me that bullshit. Who were you with tonight? You think I’m a fool? You think I don’t see what is going on here?”

Ugochi stood up too, alarmed. “What is wrong with you, Ikem? Please don’t start your crap with me tonight.” She made as if to move away.

“Crap? Did you say crap? Are you talking to me like that?” he grabbed her arm, swung her back, and before she could adjust her stance, gave her a resounding slap. The force of the slap knocked her back on her seat.

She sat there staring at him with a palm pressed to her stinging cheeks, too stunned to do anything other than stare, tears streaming down her face. He stood over her, still vibrating with anger.

“Ikem, did you just slap me?” Ugochi asked incredulously

“Yes, I did. And if you provoke me further, I’ll serve you the second round.”

She stood up, her palm still pressed to her cheek, staring at him, dumbfounded. “What has come over you? Where is all this coming from, Ikem?”

“Don’t ask me stupid questions. I am the one with the questions here. Which guy did you go out with this evening?”

“I don’t have to stand here and take this from you. Excuse me.” she sniffled as she walked past him.

He wanted to grab her again, but he refrained from doing so, and watched her go while a myriad of feelings passed over his face.

The final one that settled in was guilt. He didn’t know what just came over him. He usually does not react with such anger, but this time around, he just couldn’t stop himself from hitting her.

The anger had started to build in him when his friend, Donald, called him this evening to tell him he spotted Ugochi in a small café with a man. Donald said they had looked very cozy together, and he just wanted to inform her as the good friend he was.

Ikem did not believe that for a moment, he knew why Donald called, it was to rub it in his face, to throw his absolute faith in Ugochi back in his face. He had constantly bragged about how faithful Ugochi was, now for her to throw this in his face? It was intolerable.

He took a minute to think of the many years they had been together and how in all those years he had never had a reason to doubt her.

He thought of the look of hurt in her face as she walked out on him, and how much he loved her. Could he be wrong here?

Is it possible what Donald saw was entirely innocent, or could Donald have been lying? What reason would he have for lying?

All these thoughts streaked across his mind as he paced around the living room. Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?

Ugochi lay on the bed as silent tears trickled down her face. What just happened here? It was as if I was talking to another man entirely.

What could have prompted this sort of behavior from Ikem? I can’t believe he actually struck me. She thought miserably.

In the three years they had been together, Ugochi had never had a reason to complain about Ikem.

Sure, they had their differences like every couple but it had been nothing that couldn’t be resolved quickly and easily. Their relationship had been good, and as comfortable as an old pair of pajamas.

Six months ago, when Ikem asked her to move in with him, she had not hesitated. She had been happy he suggested it as it had been on her mind for a while, but she had not brought it up. She had not had any reason to doubt or question his feelings for her, until now.

Now, she could not believe he could raise his hand to strike her. It felt like a dream she would wake up from very soon. This could not be happening, could it?
