The Old Flame (5) Timi

He was standing by his desk, going through a document when she marched into his office. He looked up and a look of surprise followed by a broad smile appeared on his face on seeing her.

"Oluchi! Good to see you! I was about calling to wish you a happy birthday before..."

"Don't bother!" she said shortly, dumping the box of presents on his desk. "And you can have these back. I don't need them!"

He gazed at the box then up at her face. "Must you do this Oluchi? It's just for old times' sake!"

Then he drew close to her.

"Do you hate me that much? You used to be so crazy about me!" he stated quietly.

"That was then! Before you betrayed me with that bitch!" Then she turned and fled from the office before he could speak. She stood outside along the long passage that led to her office, trying to calm her fast beating heart.

Her phone rang then. It was Bernard. He was calling to tell her to leave her evening free as he was taking her out for dinner after work.

The Old Flame (4) making amends

'Feelings that come back are feelings that never left' - (anonymous)

***
The retrenchment letters began to arrive two weeks after the new management took over the company. It was a tense period for the staff, many of whom were unsure of their fate. When over ten workers in her department got fired, Oluchi, began to worry like her colleague Lola who was having sleepless nights about the situation.

One Monday morning at the office, Oluchi saw her clearing her desk and drawers of her personal and work items which she placed in a large shopping bag.

"What are you doing?" she asked, looking at her friend curiously.

"What does it look like?" Lola retorted. She continued with her task in a determined manner, as if her sack letter was already in her bag and she was ready to leave. "I have a feeling my letter will arrive today so I'm getting ready so it doesn't take me by surprise. Truth is, I've started looking for another job and I'll advise you to do the same," she said.

Grace, another colleague of theirs came in then. There was a gloomy look on her face that dampened the others' spirits further. She walked slowly to her seat, sat down and with her hand on her chin, announced:

"A fresh batch of letters have just left HR."

The Old Flame (3)

Initially, it was strictly platonic between us. Eric had a girlfriend then, Becky, a student at another school in the city.

She used to visit him once in a while and we did not get along. Whenever she saw me with Eric, she would frown and act funny. Timi told me to ignore her, that she always acted that way whenever she saw any girl around him.

"She's always jealous and suspicious of other girls around Eric," she said then.

Things changed between us three months after I began teaching Eric.

He invited Timi and I to his friend's birthday party and after that, we had to stay at the house because it was too late to return home. Timi was with her boyfriend. One thing led to the other and I ended up in bed with Eric.

That was the start of our relationship. He confessed to me that night that he loved me and he had been holding back because of Becky.

Later, I told Timi what happened and she advised me to be careful because of Eric's reputation as a playboy.

"Eric has broken many girls' hearts. I don't want you to join the long list," she said. But like a fool, I refused to listen as I was already in love with him. So, I listened to my heart which longed for him.

The Old Flame (2)

They stood at the balcony at the side of the office building which overlooked an empty plot of land. It was thickly covered with weeds and small trees and shrubs on which birds skipped from one branch to the other.
It was one of her favourite spots in the building where she occasionally came to clear her head for a while during work. She now watched distractedly as a brown-feathered bird with a white belly perched on a small pawpaw tree, its delicate leaves swaying under its weight.

She was confused by her reaction at meeting Eric again after all these years. Whenever a scenario like that, of meeting again, played out in her mind, she had seen herself being distant and cold to him.

So, why was she standing calmly chatting with him as of it was the most natural thing in the world?

 Why was she...?

"So good to see you again, Oluchi," he was saying. "You haven't changed much; just added a little weight. It suits you." His eyes flickered over her, taking in the well-cut navy blue trouser suit to her black open toed high heeled shoes.

She did not speak but simply gazed at his face- the same face that used to make her heartbeat quicken back in the day, when he meant the whole world to her until things fell apart for them.

Now fate seemed to have thrown them together again.

The Old Flame (1)

It was way past lunch time and Oluchi was already feeling the pangs of hunger. That morning, before leaving home, she had not taken breakfast as was her habit. She did not like eating so early in the morning and often took some mid morning snacks before lunch time.

But she had been too busy all morning to have time for brunch.

Yawning, she got up and stretched her tired limbs before resuming her seat. She still had a lot of work to do on a report her boss wanted delivered before the close of work, so food would have to wait.

The Old Flame - story promo

"Follow your heart but don't forget to take your brain with you." (anonymous)

     ***
Life has a way of playing tricks on one. And when it comes to matters of the heart, it can leave one confused at times. This is what Oluchi, (the protagonist of this story) discovered recently.

First a brief intro of the story. Oluchi and Eric dated back in the university but she broke up with him when she found out he was also going out with her roommate. And a couple of other girls as well, on campus. He really broke her heart back then.

A Hard Place (2) decision time

Defying Bara
I paid no heed to my wife's words and continued to see Diane and my children. I rented an apartment for her at another side of town and I shuttled between my two homes.

I knew my wife was not happy that I was still seeing Diane despite her threats, but there was nothing I could do about that. All my family members especially my mother were happy with the birth of my boys.

In fact, for the first six months after their birth, she relocated to the city from our village in Delta State just to be with her grandsons. She stayed with Diane and the babies and was very helpful with caring for them.

Diane's mother was dead so she had no one to rely on except my mother. They both got along very well and I was happy to see two of the important women in my life so close.

Back home with my wife, things were not going too well for us. Bara was cold to me most of the time, especially when she suspected I had just returned from visiting Diane and the children.

A Hard Place (1)

I never planned getting a mistress or having children outside my marriage but my situation at home contributed significantly to it.

You see, my wife has not been able to give birth to a child since our marriage about ten years ago. We have tried everything including tests, drugs, massages and other methods.

But no issue, pregnancy not even a miscarriage.

For years, I was worried about my childless state. Most of my mates who were married like me all had kids. I felt incomplete as a man, that there was something wrong with me. That was  until something happened about four years ago that changed my situation.

My wife's young cousin, Diane came to stay with us while searching for a job after her youth service programme.

Caught Up (4) back home

After picking up the gauntlet, we had such a blast. We drank and let loose. Then more drinks started coming, even without us ordering. We were doing what we were good at- attracting attention.

Soon guys were all over our table and the game finally began. When the make out session started getting hot at the table, I agreed to dance with the guy on my left and we joined in the bumpin and grindin.
Before, I would tease my catch with my body, now I don’t even want him touching restricted areas.

I’m thinking and I don’t want to do that either. I’m not drunk enough. If I’m going to survive this night without a conscience I need to get really drunk.
I find myself making out with this guy and it’s suddenly too much, I can’t stand it. I push him away, wear a sexy smile and almost race to my seat.
The table is almost empty, just Michelle and a guy are flirting with each other, the others have probably left.

Caught Up (3)

Throughout the day I wore a mask. I made sure I smiled and flirted more than ever and if I got the contacts of several guys, I didn’t really care. I’m not even going to call them. I just used them to get through the day and escape the hawk eyes of my friends.

Now I’m home and most of the things I bought(I really spent today) are still in the car. I’ll get them out later. Now, I just want to lay on my bed and have a good cry.

After all this time, why now? Saying he never got over me, what did it mean? And he has a kid!
Do I want to talk to him? Reunite?
No, no. We’re a closed chapter. Not going back.
Not ever.

Caught Up (2)

It’s Saturday and the girls and I are at the mall. We shop a lot and we love it. We not only shop for things, we also shop for the hot men- the ones worth our time.

Lucy- a part of the Playgirls Club and my bestfriend, is talking about the social event her parents are planning and all the well-known people that are going to be there. She’s trying to convince us to show up with her because she has to be there in order to portray the perfect family. A family she can’t stand.
We’re talking about it when I hear someone calling me.

“Steph!”

No one calls me that.
Only one person called me that.
