For the sake of love

It's that time of the year again, the season of love, Valentine or Lovers Day when the true essence of love is celebrated. Many couples choose different ways and activities to mark the day with the exchange of gifts the most popular manner of sharing love among friends, lovers and family.

However, the day, which is usually associated with romance, should not just be a day for couples or those in a relationship. Valentine Day should be a time to extend love to all- family, neighbours, colleagues, the community and the world in general.

So, whether you are in a loved up relationship, newly dating, married (either happily or otherwise), long distance relationship, single (and not searching!), divorced or separated, you can be part of the day by planning activities that suit your tastes and needs, not that of marketers who go on an overdrive this period to promote their goods and services.

Are you married or in a long term relationship? With the passing years, commitments (work, family, community) children and familiarity, things can get into a rut with the old flame of love not burning as bright as it was in the early days when you first met.

Why not use this period to shake things up a bit with some activities that will add some spice to your relationship. One cool way is taking out time for each other, to spend some 'us' time. This will enable you rediscover yourselves, make you remember the things that drew both of you together and decide to pair up.

A short city break or a holiday will be ideal for this. Remember, this can only work if you leave all commitments behind so you can focus on each other. So, no work, no kids, just the two of you, so you can rekindle your passion for each other like it was back in the day.

Other fun outings for couples this period include boat cruise, dinner buffet or dinner for two, a day trip to the countryside to explore some natural, local tourist attractions, visit to the museum, the cinema among others. Whatever you do, what matters most is spending quality time together, to enable you reignite the flame of love.

Long distance lovers can be a part of this period as well even if they are thousands of miles  apart. Modern day technology has made communication easy so you can stay in touch by phone calls, Facebook, video calls, Skype among others.

Wake your partner up with a beautiful love note (sms or email) first thing on Valentine morning
followed by a phone call. This will make you feel as if you are together even if you are separated by a mighty ocean.

If you have the means, why not book a flight and surprise your loved one with a visit? I bet you, that will be the best valentine gift you can give him/her- yourself!

Single on Valentine day? No problem! The day can be fun for singletons as well especially for those who are happily singe! Yes, contrary to general belief, some people are quite happy being alone and not in a relationship maybe due to bad experiences in love, death of a loved one or divorce.

Being single is no excuse for spending the day all by yourself. You can arrange fun and entertaining activities with friends or colleagues for the day. These include a beach party (if the weather permits), going out for dinner or a movie. Since the day is on a weekend, you could order take always and some drinks, invite some close friends over to your place (preferably single) and have a little party.
